Seventh Period Only

Hey Everyone!

This week, I want you to think/write about the following question: How did the characters and events in Anthem come to be?  I mean, how and why did they form their society apart from the rest of the world?  Who are they? Where did they come from? Why did they leave their "world" and form a new one? As always, it would be awesome if you choose to comment with each other. Your entry will be due by midnight Friday, November 20th.

  1. I believe that Anthem came to be when the end of the world came and destroyed most of the human race. The few people left, came together and brainstormed to find out what the biggest problem was in the past. They must have decided that being yourself and being different was bad and that if everyone was on the same level, then no one would become power hungry and want to take over, yet those people did that same thing. They took all the power to themselves, and made everyone the "Great We" where everyone is one person and no one is unique, different, and superior.

Since they eliminated all the individuality of everyone, they ruined their society. With everyone the same, no advances can be made in technology. A definition of a fool is someone who tries to do the same thing to get different results. That's what they were doing. They were trying to be the same, but in the end it was all pointless when they were trying to change. If we were all the same then no one would step up to the plate and try to make that change. If there was no change, there was no point to their life. Their life was to do their job, than die and make way for the next generation, and then the process just repeats itself. There is no meaning to life if there is no individuality.Without individuality then there is no significant emotion that makes us human. Without emotion we are just farm animals with no knowledge other than our job and death. There lives were ruined by those trying to change society against its course. Though they succeeded in changing it, they didn't succeed in stopping individuality. All because of Equality. The one who was different.

  2. I think the old government, or a group of powerful people, chose to break off from the way things used to be because they had their own idea of how life and the world should be. They wanted it to be perfect, making sure that everyone was equal and followed the rules. By pushing these thoughts into people's minds, no one would break the laws because they knew it was wrong, so anyone who did would be punished to show the power of the rulers or government of this new society. They probably once lived in a world much like our own, yet it might've gotten to the point of so much evil or sin that people wanted a new way of life and the only way to accomplish that was to start completely over. It would be very hard to make a completely perfect society though, there will always be one or a few people who question why things are the way they are, or start rebelling. The people who started this society may have been doing it to help the world, but what if they did it just because they wanted power?

  4. I believe that the society of Anthem was created by a group of people with good intentions in mind, but went sour. I think it started with a huge event or a slow process wherein everyone in the world was malicious toward each other and only cared about themselves. This situation became so dire that a global revolution needed to occur. I think they did this by stealing and taking children from all over the world, and raising them in this society, the proceeding to burn all other literature so they have no chance of recreating the events that occurred in the unmentionable times. What happened after this was the creation of the society wherein the founders of it became the heads, and then passed the position on as time passed. They obviously made a flaw in their preparations because Prometheus was able to find the info and changed.

  5. I feel like the characters from Anthem came to be because they once lived in a society similar to ours, or maybe even worse. I think they lived in a society that was starting to rebel and there was a lot of judgement and fighting between places and people, so the government or leaders decided to take away all rights and individuality from the people. They are the children or family of people who once lived in a normal society, I feel like I can also compare them to robots because they have no thoughts of their own. I think they formed this new world so that no one would have a voice of their own and no one would try to fight back, hoping there would never be any problems.

  6. With a society such as this where individual thoughts are outlawed, I think the only way this happened is because there was so much individuality in the world. My theory being is that when things started falling apart, it was a near future. Governments have been letting ease go, with the thought of democracy slowly creeping into some more chaotic thing. Suddenly Governments caught wind of all these uprisings and decided that they should have a little control. But the people who would expressing such individuality to the point where they wouldn't care what the government did. So in my theory yes there was a war. The two sides being Democracy and Anarchy. This war was a lot like terrorism is now, but on more of a scale where hundreds of thousands died per attack on each other. Entering a point where nuclear war was the only possible solution. With only a fraction of humans surviving on the earth, and who knows how many years later, people realized that the only reason the war happened was because they had so much individuality. Haunted by the fact of their choices they took an oath to act as one society. Soon spreading across the reaches of the land, and soon the rest of the world, their ideas and restrictions became a common thing. (Take in mind this process probably conspired hundreds of years.) What I relay to you is only a theory.

  7. I'm not entirely sure if your talking about Equality or everybody in that society. But I think that everyone in that society is the way they are because of the first founders of that society that created this Utopian world the way they wanted it after the 'unmentionable times" were over. And Equality is the one person that's different, like in Divergent and Hunger games and other stories like those.
What I wonder about is if there are other societies out there in the world in the book "Anthem". Maybe all the people who were left after the unmentionable times disagreed on how the societies should be and so different groups went and started their own. So there's many societies all over. Or, you know, Anthem's society is the only society. What a lonely life.

  8. I think that the society in Anthem came to be because humanity is always striving to be better or to even be the best. However, perfection is simply not something that can be achieved. Humans have flaws and always will. The people who created the society in Anthem were so determined to achieve perfection, that they actually lost what perfection really is. To me, perfection is different people fighting for their own causes. It is the individuality of a person that makes them so special and the differences among humanity that make up a successful society. I think the people of this society came from a world war that was fought because of strong opinions like religion. I think they eventually came to the point that no man should be able to have his own opinion and that everyone would be happier if they all agreed on the same things. These people were living in chaos and decided to completely start over. They sought perfection but they achieved the destruction of humanity and individuality.

  9. I think that Anthem is a cliche future utopia book. Meaning that the world went through lots of wars and dark times. Then some people created what they thought would be a perfect and peaceful society, and they think it'll last forever that way. But there is always someone who disagrees with how society is working. There seems to be quite a few series that go along the lines of this outline. However, Anthem is unique because I think that Equality wants to fit in but everyone thinks that he can't, when in other books, the main character is usually trying to stand out and be different. Towards the end of the book, Equality comes to realize that his society has a lot of flaws, and individually, everyone has flaws. Imperfection is what makes all of us human.

  10. The Anthem is another book about trying and failing to have a perfect society or government. No matter how hard someone tries and what methods they use, someone will always disagree and rebel. The cycle goes on and on; new societies, different rebellions, then another new society. That's how I believe this society came about. Someone disagreed of the previous way society/government was ran and decided to change it. When they changed or overthrew that lifestyle they created the new society as written in Anthem. But, as always, someone disagreed with this way of living and again tried to change it.

  11. I think the society in Anthem came to be after World War III. Many governments in the world were corrupt, and so in result, a group of people decided to create a new society. A society where people couldn't choose or think for themselves, for these leaders believed that their citizens had no significance; that they were all-knowing. They thought that in order to have an idealistic society, there had to be control, and because of this, there was no freedom and no choices. That our previous state of government was too lenient, and poorly lead. They found themselves superior to our past leaders, and felt the need to lead others the way it should've been before.

  12. I think equalities society is the outcome of several wars and plagues. The entire population was wiped out save a select few individuals. These few individuals met together to reform a new society, a utopian society. As repopulating this society this population was restricted from individuality. As this population grew and the founders passed no one knew the truth of the unmentionable times.

As equality reforms the new society, maybe non-individuality is restricted. People have to have EGO'S. This is what happens when some one tries to create a utopian society. It's not possible because people will always rebel. People will always have their own minds and imagination. Restrictions only cause rebellion.

  13. I think the society was made because of all the technology. I think the government,or the people who made the society, thought that all our technology had corrupted us. They probably had many wars in order to wipe out all of those who were against the non-technology world. After the many wars they finally got rid of everything. They decided to look back into the past and create another world like that. As you can tell in the book they have to use candles because there's no electricity until Equality finds it. They took what was left of those who survived and enforced them to live like in the past. They then made new rules about living together and socializing.

  14. I think the differences in human beings were becoming more and more apparent, and a leader or a group wanted to change this. This group wanted everyone to be equal, though they were obviously male, since females are not considered as important as males. The group also didn't like technology, and were probably old fashioned. As for the characters, they all listened and obeyed the rules, and don't see anything wrong with their way of living. Equality has always been different, always thought more, and that's a big theme in utopia fictions. I think they formed this world to try and perfect it, but as a new generation came, they changed and wanted an orderly society, not a perfect one.

  15. Blog entry

In the beginning I imagine that there was a big war that wiped out millions of people on the earth. And the only way to insure that nothing that tragic would happen again was to brainwash all the people, making them forget everything in the past including all personal information like, looks, names, occupations etc. Maybe the council is in charge of all of this and they wanted everyone to be unified so instead of saying “I” they say “we” because they believe that all men are equal and need to have a greater understanding of that.

  16. I believe that anthem came to be is how any other “utopian” world would come to be, a war. A war usually starts it off and then a group of people think that it would a “great” and “smart” to form a new world where they “prevent” this war from repeating. They're always wrong, someone always knows that the past was better than the present utopian world they supposedly built to help. The council is who they are and they think they're superior to everyone else because they formed this world. These people came from the past. They left their world because of the nasty war that they wanted to prevent to happen so they formed a new one. These people who try and do what's “best” for everyone think in their own way and are quite selfish for not thinking of other people. They're not smart enough to think about the future, or anything else for that matter, and think that it's good to set these rules that are so strict no one will like. They're only satisfied with themselves as rulers. So it's better if everyone had a right to their freedom like in the United States of America, I'm not saying we're perfect but it's a lot better than what others think is perfect.

  17. I think that the society was created after a big world war. Everyone was was scattered all through the world and were lost. They needed hope and a place to live because everything was destroyed in the war and they formed the society for the people. Who are they? The are normal people like you and me that needed a place to go. Where did they come from? They came from the world during the unmentionable times. Why did they leave their world to form the new one? The people needed a new world there family was dead and they had no one they needed their new world

  18. I think that they killed themselves off, like in a war of some kind. In doing so, they came up with a way to prevent that from ever happening again. This resulted in the system they have in place, where I is We. Everyone is one, and no one is just one. No individuals. However, they had to reject all technology or people would get curious again and want to think for themselves. The other people in the world are either dead, or scattered far far away.

  19. In the book Anthem, I think the society that is set up would not be functional. People are meant to be unique and different and they would not allow themselves to be oppressed. It's just not human nature. This might work for a while, with the right kind of people, but there is no way they could keep up this way of life for long.
In the book, it showed that the people, where not happy. They could not live like that. Without happiness you become depressed and with depression it is very hard to function. I just feel like this idea in not possible at all.
